The 5 ft depth is ideal for actually swimming: a 6 ft adult has the water around shoulder height, so freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke are all comfortable. For the water volumes these pools hold, cartridge filters need frequent changes and lose efficiency. A sand filter runs longer, filters finer and handles large volumes with less intervention — a backwash every 4–6 weeks is enough to maintain it.
